Executive summaries are one of the important documents you will write
Many people won’t read further than your executive summary, unless the quality of that summary persuades them that it’s worth their while to read further. That means your summary needs to be authoritative, engaging and informative, while also being concise.
This is a tough ask when you’ve just put all your energy into writing the rest of the document! I find executive summaries one of the hardest documents to write for all of the reasons listed above. That’s why I developed a nine step process to help us all to write summaries we are proud to publish.
This guide to executive summaries covers:
- thinking about the document from your reader’s point of view
- selecting and grouping text from your original document as a basis for your content
- rewriting and polishing your key messages.
