AI Coaching for Council Staff and Consultants

You know AI could help you but don’t want to spend a lot of time going to training course. You just want to get underway with using it effectively in your work.

Here's how I help

If you work on complex council projects with tight deadlines, it’s hard to carve out time to figure out how AI fits into your process. And the generic advice out there doesn’t account for the specific demands of council documents.

I provide 1:1 AI coaching that’s grounded in 30 years of local government experience. Instead of general tips, you get prompts and processes designed for the actual documents you’re working on.

Here are some of the options.

Report writing

I’ve developed a series of prompts to support report writing, from issue identification and options analysis through to revising your draft and polishing your sentences.

Over four sessions we’ll work on your report together, using my AI prompts in Copilot to help us. By the end of our work together you’ll have a completed report, ongoing access to the prompts, and much more confidence in your report writing ability.

AMP writing

Writing an asset management plan is a major undertaking. I’ll develop AI prompts tailored to your AMP review process — helping you work through the research, analysis and drafting stages more efficiently while maintaining the quality and consistency your plan needs.

The starting point for this work will be my AI for AMP writing presentation .

Custom AI coaching

Have a different project in mind? I work with council staff and consultants on a wide range of documents  strategic plans, consultation documents, policies, bylaws and more. We’ll identify where AI can add value to your particular work, and I’ll develop bespoke prompts to help you get there.

I can also help you develop standalone AI tools (such as conversational tools and  interactive directories) if this is appropriate for your situation.

How custom AI coaching works

Step 1: Free call to discuss your project

We’ll talk about your upcoming project and how this service works. By the end of this call you can decide if you’d like to proceed to a discovery session.

Step 2: Discovery session

In this session we’ll discuss the elements of your work that you’d like AI to help with, and the options available to you. We’ll also clarify the scope.

Step 3: Proposal

You’ll receive a proposal outlining the agreed scope and project fee. (If you decide not to go ahead you will only be charged for the discovery session.)

Step 4: I design your AI prompts

I’ll develop draft prompts and tools, drawing on my own experience and the ongoing resources and guidance I invest in.

About me

I worked in policy and planning roles at Nelson City Council for nearly 20 years, so I understand the types of documents you need to produce. For the past 12 years I’ve been providing writing and editing services for councils around New Zealand.

Since 2024 I’ve been learning how to apply AI specifically to local government work. I’ve developed prompts and frameworks that help council staff use AI safely and effectively.

Frequently asked questions

Can this work with Microsoft Copilot?

Yes. I develop prompts for use in Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT or Claude. Where appropriate, we can also discuss more advanced tools using ChatGPT or Claude.

Do I need any AI experience to get started?

No. I work with people at all levels, from those who haven’t used AI at all to those who are already experimenting but want more structured support.

What if my council has restrictions on AI use?

I follow strict confidentiality protocols and use only secure, appropriate AI tools for different risk levels of information. I’ll share my AI Policy with you during setup, and I’m happy to adapt it to meet your organisation’s requirements.

How much does it cost? The discovery session is $120 + GST. After that session, you’ll receive a proposal with a project fee based on the agreed scope.
