Gain Confidence Using AI in Your Council Role

Transform how you work at your council

The AI Prompt Writing Workshop is perfect for you if you think AI might help you work faster and smarter, but:

  • you haven’t had much time to experiment with how to apply AI to your work

  • you’re not sure how to write prompts that will give you useful results
  • you’re not sure which AI models are safe for you to use for council work.

About the AI Prompt Writing Workshop

You’ll walk away with:

  • A proven 3Rs framework for writing prompts that gets results.
  • Real experience of using AI on your work.
  • Increased confidence in using AI.
(I asked people to rate their confidence out of 10 at the beginning and end of the Marlborough workshops, and many people gained four points, e.g. from 0–4, 3–7 or 4–8).
  • Ready-to-use AI prompts specifically designed for council work.
  • A risk management framework for using AI safely in a council setting.
  • Six months’ access to two AI tools to support your ongoing use of AI.

      About me

I worked in policy and planning roles at Nelson City Council for nearly 20 years, so I understand the types of documents you need to produce. For the past 11 years I’ve been providing writing and editing services for councils around New Zealand.

Over the past year, I’ve been learning how to apply AI specifically to local government work. I’ve developed tools and frameworks that help council staff use AI safely and effectively, and I’ve delivered this workshop to more than 100 staff at Marlborough District Council, helping them to build their confidence with these new tools.

Feedback from Department of Conservation staff

“Debra provided a series of AI prompt writing workshops for our team of 28, all of whom work in technical fields involving complexity and lengthy processes. The feedback from the team was that the sessions were very relevant and useful for their work. Being able to compare experiences some time after the initial workshop helped reinforce the learning and provide new ways to apply AI in our work. Debra’s approach was clear, engaging, and tailored to our needs—she made a complex topic accessible and fun.

In short, Debra’s AI prompt writing workshops were engaging, practical and inspiring. Our team left with clear tools to boost creativity and efficiency – highly recommended!”

      Frequently asked questions

How do I know this will work for my specific council role?

The workshop uses a 3Rs framework which works for any council role – from policy and planning to engineering and communications. You’ll work on prompts to support your current work, so you’ll see immediate relevance to your work.

What if my manager has concerns about AI use?

The workshop includes clear guidance on using AI safely within a risk management framework. I share this framework with you prior to the workshop, so you can confirm this approach with your manager.

Do I need any previous experience with AI?

No prior AI experience is needed. The workshop is designed for complete beginners (and for people wanting to expand their current use). I’ll guide you through everything step by step. All you need is access to your council’s free version of Copilot.

Can I attend if I work as a consultant for councils?

Yes, consultants who work with councils will also find this training valuable. It will give you confidence that you can pass on extra value to your clients in future.

Training for consultants will include two variations:

      • We’ll discuss alternatives to Copilot, such as the paid versions of ChatGPT and Claude, which may be more effective and secure options, depending on your subscription and settings.
      • I will help you develop your own AI Policy, to provide a transparent service for your clients.
