I must admit they're not the most photogenic of creatures, but I am really glad to know that long tailed bats are returning to the Wakapuaka catchment thanks to the great work Forest and Bird have been doing on restoring the coastal forest at Paremata Flats. (The bats fly over from their breeding area in Pelorus and roost in the tall trees.)
Long tailed bats are native to NZ, and recent research has identified they need deep, fresh water for drinking as they fly up a river system.
